How to Prepare for Dorm Life

You’re about to head off to college, but you have no idea how you are going to move all of your stuff from your room and closet up to your dorm. This is not a logistical issue; rather, it’s a question of how are you going to stuff 18 years of clothes, gadgets, sports equipment, and everything else that’s overflowing from your room and into the hallway closets, garage, attic and basement of your parents’ house.

Well, here’s the good news and the bad news: You can’t take everything with you.

The reality of a dorm room is that it’s small, and if you didn’t know it, you’re likely going to be sharing that already small space with another person, so it’s time to make a few choices about what’s absolutely essential and what can be stored at your parents’ house until you can get a place of your own.

If you are worried about the types of items that are essential for dorm life, below is a list of just some of the must-haves to get you through the year:

  1. Bedding and pillows
  2. Toiletries and a handy shower caddy to tote them down the hall to the bathroom
  3.  Clothes hangers
  4. Clothes hamper
  5. A rug
  6. A microwave and mini fridge
  7. Dishes and utensils

These basic items are a good foundation for the types of things you’ll need in your room. Once you move in, you’ll likely have more items that you may need for your dorm.
